Green Team racing takes maiden win.

Oliver’s Real Food Racers are in their fifth season of Australia’s premier road cycling series and look like having their best season yet. The 15-rider strong Green Team has been a win in their sights for a while now and had their breakthrough last weekend at the latest round of the Subaru National Road Series 2017, title appropriately - Battle Recharge.

Sponsored by Oliver’s Real Food – the healthy alternative to fast food options on the road, the Green Team had a secret weapon in Brendan Davids, a South African cyclist with a background in mountain biking.

The second day of racing delivered a classic Queensland day… plenty of heat with temperatures in the mid-30s and strong westerly winds to make it interesting. The conditions set up the Green Team for a chance to get out in front. Davids was able to secure the early breakaway and pull away. As a bit of an unknown (not for long) nobody seemed too fussed in chasing him down and with plenty of strong riding, managed to hold off the rest.

Green Team manager Sam Layzell summed up how the entire crew was feeling:

'It's come at a very good time, we've been knocking on the door now for a little while so it's good to finally pull it off.'

Oliver’s Real Food racers and crew wear Kusaga Athletic’s Greenest Tee for travelling and we also help out with advice on sustainability options as they pursue their vision of being the most sustainable cycling team in the world. So, when they offered me a chance to join the crew car for a stage, I was pretty quick to say yes!

It was a tremendous opportunity to see the entire team work as a tight unit, and things were pretty frenetic in between passing over nutrition and water and instructions going back and forth to riders and officials.

Layzell, also at the wheel of the car, paid credit to Davids' superb riding but was just a quick to credit the rest of the Green team riders.

'It's the way the team has operated over the past couple of weeks, I'm going to soak up this moment because it means a lot.'

On the final day, the team controlled the peloton to enable Davids to take the Green Team’s first ever National Road Series general classification win. On top of winning the yellow jersey for Stage 3, Davids also picked up the sprint classification jersey.

'What an epic ride by this guy, he's just totally taken the race by storm. Super impressed.' Layzell said.

A huge day for the Green Team and everyone involved in Oliver's Real Food Racing, and a great reward for the years of training and perseverance.
